Job Description – Maintenance and Custodial Support

 

JOB SUMMARY:

  • The Maintenance and Custodial Support person for St. James Church will be responsible for the cleanliness, maintenance, physical appearance and safety of St. James buildings and grounds.  The Maintenance and Custodial Support person will perform general janitorial and housekeeping duties and is primary in observing and reporting any problems related to plumbing, heating, air conditioning and/or other maintenance-related issues within the Church and Rectory.

  • This is a part-time position at 15-18 hours per week, including Sunday mornings during the winter months.  The position calls for the employee to work flexible hours as conditions demand. The Maintenance and Custodial Support person will report to the Priest in Charge.   This is an excellent position for someone looking to share their time and talents, while supporting the mission of the church.                 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •          Proactively perform routine maintenance and basic repairs.
  •          Clear snow from sidewalks and entrances.
  •          General yard work includes mowing, raking, weeding and watering.
  •          Adjust lights and boiler timers during seasonal changes.
  •          Identify and report any heating, plumbing and electrical system problems and needs.
  •          Repair minor plumbing problems.
  •          Monitor supply use for restocking (primarily paper goods and rock salt)
  •          Paint and maintain finishes.
  •          Set-up and break down furniture for events as needed. Assist in setting up and taking down decorations for holidays and special events.
  •          The following janitorial duties will be required
  • o   Clean all bathrooms throughout the church.
  • o   Sweep, vacuum, and/or wet mop various flooring surfaces on a regular basis.
  • o   Replace light bulbs when necessary
  • o   Collect trash and recycling from offices, conference rooms, etc.
  •  
  •          Transfer Altar flowers to compost.
  •          Ensure that fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and emergency lights are inspected as required. Maintain log of inspection dates.
  •          Keep all building entrances and grounds clear of debris/litter.
  •          Other projects and duties, as assigned by the Parish Administrator, Rector, or Wardens.
  •          Complete minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs
  •          Determine if repairs can be handled in house or with a contractor
  •          Communicate with PIC and Wardens regarding building, equipment and grounds status
  •          Communicate with contractors as required.
  •          Blow down boilers weekly.
  •          Clear refuse from grass areas.
  •          Walk the perimeter of the building and the grounds looking for deficiencies.
  •          Check flat roof drain for ice plug and clear as required.
  •          Walk the inside of the building looking for water leaks, unexpected damage etc.
  •          Reset clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  •          Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  •          Minimum of 2 years of experience basic maintenance/custodial services.
  •          Knowledge of maintenance operations and housekeeping.
  •          Ability to operate and maintain power tools and other equipment.
  •          Mechanical maintenance knowledge and experience a plus.
  •          Demonstrate flexibility in the work environment and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  •          Ability to multitask and prioritize the workload.
  •          Ability to communicate in a productive manner with staff and parishioners.
  •          Ability to work collaboratively as a team with clergy, staff, volunteers, and church members.
  •          Must have adequate reliable transportation.
  •          Ability to provide and receive work-related text and/or voice messages from the Priest in Charge and/or wardens via the use of a personal cell phone.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position involves work in a wide range of conditions that can be physically demanding.  The successful candidate must be able to:

  •          Lift/carry/push weights of up to 40 pounds.
  •          Climb on step stool or ladder to complete tasks of the position.
  •          Able to stand, bend, reach, and stretch for extended periods of time.
